Breast reconstruction, also known as reshaping or restructuring of the breast, aims to restore partial or complete loss of breast especially following breast cancer.
Reconstructive procedures following breast cancer can be planned in the early or late stage of cancer. A breast cancer patient with an early disease can have her breast removed and reshaped simultaneously whereas for a patient with more advanced disease it would be better to wait for the disease-free interval and plan reconstruction accordingly.
Breast reconstruction can be performed with tissue expanders and silicone implants or patient’s own tissues. It is important to inform the patient thoroughly and identify a patient-specific procedure following physical examination.
